OVERVIEW

bollo is an XR-based well-aging platform that interprets users’ physical changes through golf swing data, offering personalized insights that empower individuals to actively understand and manage their own evolution.

Created in collaboration with developers, I led 3D design and XR environment design, designed interactions, and conducted user research and interviews.

PROBLEM

People can feel their bodies changing—but struggle to understand what those changes mean for how they move

As people enter their 50s and 60s, changes in flexibility, strength, and balance begin to affect how they exercise.

Yet these gradual changes are difficult to recognize and respond to during everyday movement.

  1. Changing Bodies

Physical changes become increasingly noticeable in the 50s and 60s.

  1. Changing Exercise

People begin adjusting how they move to stay active and avoid injury.

  1. Limited Body Awareness

Those changes are difficult to interpret through everyday exercise alone.

So we asked...

How are people actually adapting to these changes today?

SOLUTION

Bollo is an XR active-aging platform that turns golf movement into personalized body insights

RESEARCH

A gap between perceived ability and limitations left participants unsure how to adapt their posture

This uncertainty increased their need for personalized guidance to understand their movement, identify posture issues, and find adjustments suited to their current physical abilities.

Q. What difficulties do you experience when you exercise alone?

Exercise habits adapted to current physical abilities

“My flexibility has decreased, and I experience pain from muscle loss—especially in my knees, ankles, wrists, and shoulder joints.”

“My body doesn’t move the way it used to, so I find myself checking my posture more often. I want to understand these unfamiliar changes and know what’s actually going on with my body.”

Interviews with 11 participants

Physical decline can challenge control and identity

5 Whys

Why can declining physical abilities undermine confidence?

Q1. Why can physical changes lower confidence?

A1. They can weaken people’s sense of control over their bodies.

Q5. Why can this challenge their sense of identity?

A5. Physical abilities may have long shaped how people saw themselves. Our team interpreted the disconnect from their past selves as a feeling of

“I am gradually disappearing.”

Service goal

Help people understand their changing bodies through exercise data and adapt how they move with confidence.

SYSTEM FLOW

Expanding Data Beyond Exercise

Physical and swing data from continuous exercise help users understand themselves in daily life, enabling scalable third-party applications

Bollo system flow: collect, analyze, utilize, and review

Core Experience

  1. Practice

Practice golf in XR with real-time body tracking and personalized feedback to better understand your body and improve how you move

Mission Card: Personalized Golf Training

The system uses physical and age-related data to recommend missions tailored to your abilities. Visual guidance highlights what to adjust and the expected benefits, helping you train at your own pace.

Real-Time Body Tracking & Feedback

See your movements reflected in XR as cameras track your joints. Marimo, your AI coach, guides posture adjustments with personalized feedback while the system records your movement data throughout each session

Try tucking your lower back in just a little more, and keep your core nice and strong!

LESSON I LEARNED

Learning what makes an XR coach worth returning to

Value extends beyond the session

I learned to consider what makes an experience worth returning to. For Bollo, this meant extending the value of exercise data into everyday decisions, from choosing suitable products to communicating with healthcare professionals. This shifted my focus from designing a training session to supporting an ongoing relationship with one’s body.

An AI coach needs more than a personality

Designing Marimo taught me to connect character design with interaction logic: when the coach appears, how it speaks, and what data informs its guidance. Considering available tracking technologies alongside these decisions helped me think more concretely about how the coaching experience could work.

Concept feedback is only a starting point

The exhibition helped me understand how people perceived Bollo, but videos and prototypes offered limited insight into actual use. I learned to distinguish feedback on the concept from evidence about usability. My next step would be to test whether users can understand and act on the feedback while swinging.
